Blogger's Dream Number 186
It was a sunny afternoon as I sat quietly, putting the finishing touches on my new e-book.

I was pleased the way it came out.

Lots of good information, tightly packaged and easy to follow.

I knew my new prospects would really like it, and find tremendous value.

That was good news because when people find value in what you give them, they tend to stick with you for a long time to come. But you probably already knew that.

I waited for the final version of my sales page to fire up.

Internet was slow.

I stretched, looked out the window.

The leaves were dry and crackly, chasing each other down the sidewalk where children raced their bikes. An old lady pushed her walker to the curb to escape the reckless riders.

Tomorrow would be Halloween, and it was a classic autumn day.

The sun gave way to a dark, blustery cloud and everything got quiet.

The old oak tree stared up at me, as the sky grew cold.

But a strange shadow fell over the sidewalk and I peered to see what was causing it.

My sales page was probably open on my desktop, but my eyes were locked on the shadow.

Suddenly, it gave way to a human figure. A hideous face with eyes like darts stared up at me and I jumped back from the window.

I dropped the blinds as I sat up straight in my bed, wide-eyed and confused.

I was in a sweat and everything was dark.

The dog was sound asleep at the foot of the bed and I got to my knees to pet him, to know whether or not I was still asleep.

I prodded him to walk with me as I made my way to the window. The dog stretched and yawned while my fingers trembled.

I lifted one of the slats in the blind to cast a stealthy glance into the street, dimly lit by a faded street lamp.

Nobody was there.

I made my way back to bed, determined to get back to sleep.

Morning would come soon enough and I had a lot to do.

I needed to write an auto-responder series for subscribers of all the new subscribers who would rush in to grab my free e-book.

Now, what would I say to welcome them?

Should I just give them information, or promote one of my training courses, right out of the gate?

Maybe I should start by outlining the sales funnel I’d be taking them through…

Too many thoughts, my head was in a spin.

I had hours to go before day break as I returned suddenly to the deepest sleep.

Still, I went to work on my sales funnel.

A soft knock at the door interrupted me.

It was him!

I knew it was the man from the street.

He was here.

Why was he following me, taunting and chiding me at every turn?

I sat silently, hoping the knocking would stop.

But it got louder.

I put the pillow over my head.

But, still, I heard his voice above the noise of his relentless knocks.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he roared.

“You pretend to be an online marketer…” and he laughed, a wild, menacing laugh.

That product’s not going to sell. You can’t even give it away. You’ve done all this work for nothing. You’ll have to start all over. Nobody’s going to want it. What’s wrong with you?

All the time, the noise got louder.

“You can’t even give it away.”

I told myself it was just a dream, but I still heard his laughs.

“You’ve done all this work for nothing.”

“Stop!” I screamed back.

“I’m not listening to you. I’m never listening to you again.”

A soft laugh came from behind the door.

“You’ll have to start all over.”

Then silence.

I leapt from my bed.

All the while, though, I knew I was still asleep.

I ran across the room, moonlight peering from behind the curtain of a small window at the other side of the room.

The dog was gone.

I wondered why he had never barked.

He wasn’t there to protect me. I was alone.

I had to finish getting this project done, but now I was distracted.

When I got to the window, I hesitated.

What if he was standing under the street light, peering up at me with that menacing sneer?

My hands trembled, but there was work to do.

My sales page looked terrible… still needed work.

Who did I think I was?

I was no copywriter.  Or, not as good as I had been telling myself.

Maybe I should just trash it and start from scratch.

Maybe the whole e-book needs to be written.

Is it nearly as good as I though it was?

I slowly lifted one of the slats, ever so slightly.

I hardly touched the blind when the whole thing came unhinged and fell to the floor.

The crash broke my breathless silence and his face was in the window.

Again he taunted me.

“You think you can succeed? Ha! Who do you think you are?”

Only the thin glass separated him from me.

He laughed and snarled and pointed his finger at me.

I tried to run away, but my feet wouldn’t move.

“You’ll never get away from me,” he growled.

He laughed ever louder.

Somehow, I knew he was right. I could never escape.

“What do you want? Who are you?” I demanded.

Silence.

He never spoke again, but as the darkness gave way to the breaking light of day, I could see him clearly.

I finally realized…

He was me.
